New Mexico's cutover from BioTrack to the new state-mandated track and trace system, NMS2S, now has a dedicated page and a locked timeline. Here's exactly what happens, when, and what to do before it hits.
The Timeline
August 25, 2026, after 5:00 p.m. BioTrack functionality turns off for all licensees except retailers. Testing labs can't receive samples from August 25 through August 31, though all past testing results fully migrate by August 31. Retailers should limit inventory changes to sales and necessary reconciliation only. Retail-to-retail transfers should not happen during this window.
August 31, 2026 Everyone except retailers gets access to their migrated inventory in NMS2S. Testing resumes. Producers and manufacturers should true up any inventory changes from the migration window and confirm everything in the system is accurate.
September 1, 2026, 12:01 a.m. Retailer migration begins. Sales still run through BioTrack. Retail inventory needs to be fully synced with BioTrack Traceability before this moment hits.
September 2, 2026 Retailers get access to both BioTrack and NMS2S accounts and inventory. Sales must still process through BioTrack until the cutoff. To keep NMS2S inventory accurate for cutover day, retailers need to manually adjust down their NMS2S inventory to reflect sales happening during this window.
September 4, 2026, 12:01 a.m. BioTrack turns off for good. All cannabis activity, including sales, moves to NMS2S from this point forward.
What's Actually Changing
Courier tracking becomes part of the system. Licensed and internal couriers now get their own accounts, and every delivery has to be tracked directly in NMS2S.
Producer inventory types get restricted. Post-transition, production licensees can only receive Deli Style Cannabis, Fresh Frozen, Bulk Flower, Bulk Trim, Clones, Seedlings, and Seeds. If you're holding inventory types outside this list, NMS2S will migrate those items and let you transfer them out, but you won't be able to receive new inventory in those categories going forward.
Testing gets more structured. NMS2S draws a clearer line between sale-ready product and product still in production. Testing has to happen before something is designated sale-ready, and if a product changes form after testing, it needs a new finished product test before it can go to retail. The system also requires testing at the "Unpackaged" stage for anything that won't change form before packaging.
Medical and adult-use tracking splits apart. NMS2S separates the two markets more clearly, giving the state better data on each and more room to adjust track and trace rules as regulations evolve.
What To Do Right Now
Reconcile your inventory. Match your BioTrack records against physical inventory. Review plants, packages, harvests, and anything else tracked. Resolve discrepancies and incomplete transactions, complete outdated records, and review outstanding transfers. Confirm your license and facility info is current. Don't make adjustments just to prep for migration unless they reflect real inventory or activity.
Make sure BioTrack is synchronized. BioTrack is the source of truth right now. Only what's reflected in BioTrack at launch migrates to NMS2S. If you run a third-party POS or inventory system, confirm it's properly synced. CCD recommends pulling a Current Inventory report directly from BioTrack Traceability as your reconciliation baseline.
Check your NM-PLUS information. Existing BioTrack accounts do not carry over automatically. The primary controlling person on your NM-PLUS account becomes your license's initial NMS2S system administrator. Confirm that contact info is current before launch.
This is a lot to manage on top of running a business, especially without someone dedicated to your ops stack full time.
